Quick answer

There are 11 federal holidays in 2027. Three of them fall on a weekend, so the day off moves to a weekday:

  • Juneteenth (Saturday, June 19) is observed on Friday, June 18
  • Independence Day (Sunday, July 4) is observed on Monday, July 5
  • Christmas Day (Saturday, December 25) is observed on Friday, December 24

New Year’s Day 2028 also lands on a Saturday, so federal workers get Friday, December 31, 2027 off as well.

Most people only check the holiday list when a long weekend is coming up. The problem is that 2027 has several holidays that land on a Saturday or Sunday, and the day off is not the date printed on the calendar. This guide lists every US federal holiday in 2027, shows the exact day off for each one, and points out the long weekends so you can plan time off early.

The 11 holidays are set by federal law. The “Day off” column follows the rules the US Office of Personnel Management uses for federal employees. Most schools, banks and large employers base their own schedules on this list, but they are free to add or skip days.

How observed dates work

When a federal holiday falls on a weekend, the day off moves to the nearest weekday:

  • A holiday on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before
  • A holiday on a Sunday is observed on the Monday after

Only the fixed-date holidays can land on a weekend: New Year’s Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Veterans Day and Christmas Day. The other six are always set on a Monday or a Thursday, so they never move.

In 2027 this rule affects four days off: June 18, July 5, December 24 and December 31.

Each 2027 holiday in detail

New Year’s Day: Friday, January 1

The year starts with a three-day weekend from Friday, January 1 to Sunday, January 3.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Monday, January 18

Held on the third Monday of January to honor the civil rights leader, born January 15, 1929.

Washington’s Birthday (Presidents’ Day): Monday, February 15

The official federal name is Washington’s Birthday, though most calendars and stores call it Presidents’ Day. It is always the third Monday of February.

Memorial Day: Monday, May 31

The last Monday of May, honoring military members who died in service. In 2027 it falls on the very last day of the month.

Juneteenth: Saturday, June 19 (observed Friday, June 18)

Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021. Because June 19 is a Saturday in 2027, the day off is Friday, June 18.

Independence Day: Sunday, July 4 (observed Monday, July 5)

July 4 is a Sunday, so the federal day off is Monday, July 5. Fireworks and local events usually still happen on July 3 or July 4.

Labor Day: Monday, September 6

The first Monday of September and the unofficial end of summer.

Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples’ Day: Monday, October 11

The second Monday of October. Many states and cities mark it as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, and some do not give the day off at all.

Veterans Day: Thursday, November 11

Veterans Day always stays on November 11. In 2027 it is a Thursday, so there is no long weekend unless your employer adds Friday.

Thanksgiving Day: Thursday, November 25

The fourth Thursday of November. The Friday after, November 26, is not a federal holiday, but many employers and schools give it off.

Christmas Day: Saturday, December 25 (observed Friday, December 24)

Christmas falls on a Saturday, so the federal day off is Friday, December 24.

2027 long weekends

If you get federal holidays off, 2027 gives you 10 three-day weekends:

  • January 1 to 3 (New Year’s Day)
  • January 16 to 18 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day)
  • February 13 to 15 (Presidents’ Day)
  • May 29 to 31 (Memorial Day)
  • June 18 to 20 (Juneteenth)
  • July 3 to 5 (Independence Day)
  • September 4 to 6 (Labor Day)
  • October 9 to 11 (Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples’ Day)
  • December 24 to 26 (Christmas Day)
  • December 31 to January 2, 2028 (New Year’s Day 2028)

Thanksgiving can also become a four-day weekend (November 25 to 28) if you take Friday off.

Planning tips for 2027

  • Book travel early for June and July. Juneteenth and Independence Day both create long weekends, three weeks apart, so flights and hotels fill up fast.
  • Turn four days of leave into ten days off. Christmas and New Year’s are both observed on Fridays. Take December 27 to 30 off and you get December 24 to January 2, 2028 in a row.
  • Check payroll dates. If payday lands on an observed holiday such as June 18 or December 24, many employers pay one business day early.
  • Print a calendar and mark it now. Seeing all the days off on one page makes it easier to plan leave, school breaks and family events. Start with our free January 2027 calendar, which already has New Year’s Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day marked.
